Musings of a Thankful Writer

This morning I decided to write my list of 1,000 things I am thankful for. My wrists/hands/arms have still been bothering me so I knew I would have to take my time with the list, so I worked for a few minutes then got up and did other jobs around my office to give my wrists a break, then came back and wrote for a little bit more. I was about a thousand words (200 things I am thankful for) into the list when I knew I needed to set the list aside and give my hands a break for a couple of hours.

Do you know what though? I can easily come up with a list of 500 things I’m thankful for. I’ve never written out a list of a 1,000 things, but I think that will come semi-easily as well. Even though a messed up wrist feels like a big deal to me as a writer, I’m not going to let it get me stressed out or discouraged. I have so many blessings in my life. I have more than enough food, shelter, care and abilities. I am surrounded by people who love me. I have story ideas like crazy. I have the resources to help others.

These last couple of weeks have been a good reality check for me. My writing has been almost zero, but my blessings have been mind blowing. Every day I’ve marveled over how I am warm. I’m not really hungry. I’m not mourning family members who have been killed. I don’t have to be concerned about where I’m going to sleep tonight.
I keep wanting to freak out about what will happen if my wrists don’t heal. If the exercises and breaks I’ve been giving them don’t work. If the change in my writing set-up don’t make a positive impact. I feel shackled with having to keep my feet flat on the floor while I’m writing. Whenever I stop and think about it though, I’m overwhelmed with the good things in my life and instead of complaining or worrying I want to focus on others and helping them. My “problems” are practically nothing compared to what a lot of the world is experiencing.
So, even though I don’t have my list of things I’m thankful for ready for today, and it might not even be finished by tomorrow, I’m so extremely thankful and am working on remembering that, no matter what.

November and Writing and Thankfulness

A happy mid-week morning to you all! It’s another one of those gray-clad November days that I find so inspiring (these pictures are from a few days ago). The world around me has slowly morphed from the brilliance of early Autumn to the wet and muted colors of late Autumn with 98% of the leaves clothing the ground in a soggy mess and the remaining leaves dull and listless.
It’s days like this that are perfect for writing. (Or curling up with a book and mug of hot chocolate with a candle burning nearby.) I’m not going to be focused on writing today, though. Instead I get to spend the day in the kitchen at my non-writing job which is another one of my favorite things to do. Especially in weather like this. Who doesn’t like a warm kitchen and hot meals when the world is so cozy looking?
I’ve decided to endeavor to keep the next few blog posts on the short side because my wrist has continued to give me a bit of trouble and therefore I’ve severely limited my typing. It’s crazy because I have words bottled up in me, waiting to be spilled onto the page of my latest story and yet I’m having to tell myself “no, no, no” which is not normal for me. I’ve found some exercises for my arm/wrist/hand and so I’ve been doing those and hopefully will see improvement soon.
Do you know what my wrist hurting makes me do though? It fills me with happiness that I haven’t struggled with this problem before. I am so very, very thankful for the last ten years of my life that I’ve been typing with no trouble at all. It’s funny how sometimes we forget to be thankful for something until it’s taken away from us.

Speaking of thankfulness, there are so many things I am thankful for right now. This morning when I woke up I didn’t stop at my normal list of ten things I thank God for, instead I kept going as I put away my bedding and stumbled through my early morning routine. It’s not that life has been without problems, because I feel as if I’ve dealt with several of those recently – some of which have even left me in tears. It’s more that I am opening my eyes to the blessings around me and it is rather overwhelming.

I am even thankful for the ability to be thankful, cause do you know what? When I start thinking of things that I’m thankful for, the troubles in my life kinda get fuzzy and I lose focus on them as gratitude takes center stage and brightens the world around me. And on that note, I’d probably better sign off.

* * *
What about you? What is the firs thing that comes to mind when you think of something you’re thankful for? All you blog readers is (are?) one of the first thing that comes to my mind; it’s so rewarding to be able to share my life with y’all and so thank you for reading my blog and joining me on this crazy journey!

A List of Happiness

I’m happy to announce there are some obscure things in life that are worth getting excited about. Some people would consider these trivial, but really, it’s the minute moments we experience that end up turning into this occurrence we call life. Right? Well, since today is Wednesday and Wednesday is a great day for sharing happiness, I decided to give y’all a list happiness from the last few days:

* Having a huge stash of cute cards under my chair to write notes on
* Working on a new blog design More about this tomorrow!
* Eating breakfast in my office with my little bro while reading jokes
* This verse from today’s Proverb:

* My amazingly wonderful sister starting a blog (Y’all REALLY need to check it out! Like, now.)
* Drinking seemingly endless mugs of hot tea and decaf coffee while working at my computer
* Burning candles for hours and hours and hours we weren’t allowed to burn candles at my old house
* Discovering that chewing on a pencil helps get my writing brain active, even when I’m typing on the computer
* Finding these beautiful miniature-ish trunks and deciding to buy them I’ve only been wanting something like this for a couple of years now…

* Finally getting to a great place in my writing journey with When Life Hands You Lymes
* Being surrounded by my family
* Smile-inducing emails from friends
* An imaginative trip to Nova Scotia
* And last but not least of all discovering how to make a pie chart My life greatly improved with this skill, people!

What are some of your happiness inducing moments?

I am Thankful

I am so thankful for my life. I am so very thankful for all I’ve gotten to do and experience and help with and work on. I’m happy for experiments and excitement and extra-craziness.
I’m filled with gratitude when I think of all the places I’ve gotten to go to. All the traveling I’ve done, the people I’ve met, and the dreams I’ve had come true.
I’m thrilled when I think of the children who have read my books and enjoyed them and learned something from their pages. I’m awed when I think of my books being able to effect people who I’ll never even meet or know about. I’m simply amazed when I meet someone who has read my book and I hear about how they liked it.
I’m overwhelmed with the sense of having a special treasure when I think of my hearing and how I can listen to music for hours on end, the sweet voices of little friends telling me that they love me, birds singing and the swishing of the wind and rain.
My joy overflows when I stop and think about my eyes and all I can see. From the beautiful sunsets in Nebraska to breathtaking waterfalls in Asia, from mountain top views in Peru to fireflies blinking over a hay field here at home. From children’s dirty faces to flowers blooming in abundance. From Christmas lights sparkling to food that I’m cooking. From the words that I spend hours reading to the words I spend hours writing.
My thankfulness goes up a notch when I think of all I can smell and taste. From the scent of a fresh morning to the tingling taste of a bite of tart fruit. From the lilacs in the spring to the evergreens in winter. From butter pecan ice cream to cotton candy. From the cool air in a cave to fresh, clean water. From holiday cooking to a sweet potato with butter and cinnamon and bursting with flavor.
The ability to feel is something I’ll always be thankful for. From textures on fabric to hugs from my parents. From smooth food I’m preparing for lunch to the sharp stones beneath my feet. From the stinging awareness of cold water running over my hands to the ruffled fur on goats. From the glorious feeling of a small child’s hands in around my neck to the happy sensation of a water fight.
I get filled with a squishy sense of joy when I think of my family and how much they mean to me and how much I mean to them. I’m filled-to-bursting when I think of my friends who I’m close to who I’ve been able to shower with love and be loved by. I’m excited when I think about friends who I’m just getting to know, or getting to know better, and all the adventures and memories we’ll make in the future.
I am in awe when I think of the God of the universe, the Creator of all, taking an interest in my life. And not just a passing interest, either. He wants to be an intricate part of my every-day existence. He is what I live for. I am so thankful that He will never leave or give up on me. I’m amazed and thrilled and happy when I think of how He knows the beginning from the end, so even when I stumble and don’t live like it sometimes, I never need to worry. My life is held by perfect Hands.
I’m mystified when I think of how this can actually be my life. The wonderful, the good, the bad, and the breathtaking. This is me. These are the memories I’ll have to look back on when I’m a cute, little, old lady with white hair and a face transformed by happy wrinkles. These days when I struggle, these days when I rise above, these days when I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do next, or I do know but I’m utterly overwhelmed, these days make up my life. And my life is a gift. A gift that I’ve been given that I want to make the most of.
I am so thankful for my life. I’m thankful for the easy parts. I’m thankful for the hard parts. I’m thankful that I can take the seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years that I’ve been given and turn them into something that will make a difference in eternity.

Happy Thanksgiving, Y’all!!!

Y’all know me. Thankfulness is really an important part of my life. I find a list of things to be thankful for each morning when I wake up, and often continue the trend the rest of the day. Therefore, it’s so much fun to have just about everyone else in my country finding things to be thankful for along with me. 😉
Last year I did an A to Z list of things I was thankful for and this year I’ve been trying to think up an unique Thanksgiving post for several days now. Inspiration hasn’t struck yet, so maybe y’all are just going to get a list of things I’m thankful for in a normal, average way.

And… The inspiration struck. 🙂 Things I’m thankful for:

N– Never being alone. I know that no matter what I’m going through, be it good or bad, I have my heavenly Father caring about me, loving me, taking care of me and understanding me. That means a lot to this little ‘ol girl!

O– Occupation, my occupation. I’m so very thankful that I’m a writer. I’m incredibly thankful and blown away that I got my book published this year. I relish getting to keep up with y’all through my blog and seriously have an amazing time sharing my writing with you peoples. 😉 I’m thrilled to be able to bring God glory through my writing.

V– Victory over Lyme disease. I truly feel like I fought a battle, or considering the fact that it was six years long, maybe an all out war, and it’s extremely wonderful to be over Lyme disease now. I’m still regaining my strength and energy, but I am better. And so very, very thankful!

E– Era, one is ending and a new one is beginning in my life. Changes can be scary, but do you know what? They’re a part of life and the last chapter of my life was so epic that as hard as it can be to open a new one, I’m thankful and excited to be moving ahead. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen! (By the way, I almost said eating, but figured it was rather shallow and I could be a little deeper than that…)

L– Love. I’m so utterly blessed to be surrounded by a family (two actually, including my adopted parents) who love me an extremely vast amount, not to mention my amazing friends. And of course my wonderful heavenly Father. I’ve grown up under a deluge of love, and I’m so, so thankful for that!

T– Time. I didn’t even have to think for this letter. Time is a gift and it’s given to us to be redeemed {Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. -Eph. 5:16}. I am decidedly thankful for the time I’ve been given and have a powerful tug in my life to do as much as possible with the time I’ve been given.

E– Eating. Yes, I decided to use the word after all, because when I stopped to think about it, I realized it wasn’t really shallow after all. I’m so thankful for the food God has blessed me with. I’m exceedingly thankful for my parents spending extra money on our groceries so our family could switch to a more healthy way of eating and therefore help us get in tip-top shape.

A– Attutide. Again, attitude like time came to me as soon as I saw the letter a. I’m so very thankful to have the ability to rejoice. To have the ability to choose to see the best. That I have the ability to get rid of negative thoughts and focus on positive, thankful ones. I’m also very blessed to have parents who constantly teach those ^ principles through their own lives.

What are y’all thankful for?

Oh goodness, just a couple more things, then I’ll stop. 😉
I’m thankful for getting some sample copies of my audio CD’s last night!
I’m thankful for all the blogs I have signed up for my December Book Blog Tour, it’s going to be amazing, y’all!
And of course I’m thankful for everyone who reads my blog. Seriously, I am so thankful to be able to share bits of my life/thoughts/writing with you! I had no clue when I started blogging how much it would grow to mean to me. Thank you. And have a great Thanksgiving!

First Snow

I had a lot to post about, but then I awoke yesterday morning to snow, and the first snow of the season pretty much takes precedence over everything else.
Here are some things I’m thankful for about winter (even though it technically isn’t winter, since it’s snowed, I’m just acting like it is. =)

1. Coming into a cozy, warm house after being out in the cold
2. Soups and stews and other warm food
3. The smells: snow, chili, baking, coldness, wood-burner, smoke, coffee…
4. The holiday season: Thanksgiving and Christmas, plus all the joy, happiness, music, visiting, memories and giving that surrounds them
5. Swinging on crisp, freezing nights and watching the stars that seem ever so bright
6. Checking the thermometer to see how cold it’s gotten
7. Gazing at the beauty of a snow covered world
8. The sky, of course 😉
9. Curling up under a blanket with a book
10. The changing season and all the memories that come with it
11. Seeing the animals all cozy and huddled together outside
12. Walking along our back roads with the crunching of undisturbed snow under my feet
13. Anticipating what kind of weather the next day will bring

I hope y’all aren’t tired of my ‘thankful lists’ because I’m having a lot of fun with them! I’ve been quite overwhelmed the past while, so finding things I’m thankful for helps a lot. =)

What do you like most about snow/winter?

7 Thankful Things

Today is November 7th. Here are 7 things I’m thankful for this morning.
1. That I enjoy my job so crazy-much. Cooking is so much fun!
2. That last night was practically as perfect as weather gets. Windy, warm and dark with a side of rain.
3. Audio Bible. I can listen to it for hours at a time.
4. I can now make coffee in my Keurig
5. That I get to (Lord willing) see one of my bestest friends, Sarah, for her graduation this weekend. 😉
6. Dad got me the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” so I can *finally* read it!
7. I got a good nights sleep last night

Do you have seven things you’re thankful for?
