Book Covers // Talent

Book Covers. I think most people would agree they’re important. There have been plenty of times I’ve wanted to read a book because of how exciting/interesting/beautiful the cover was. And then there have been other times I’ve passed over a book that I later found out to be amazing, just because the cover was dull.
I’m not artistic. I can’t even begin to comprehend how an illustrator works their magic. Really, I sometimes stare at drawings and wonder How in the world did that get on this piece of paper? It’s one of those things that leaves me in awe. Much like listening to a good piece of music. I just can’t fathom how they do it.

I have been absolutely blessed with an amazing illustrator for my Action Kids books. Often times I’ll stare at the illustrations she’s drawn and think “Wow, these are just the style I wanted!” I ‘met’ Leah through Go Teen Writers, the on-line writing group I’ve been a part of for several years. Her talent is something to gasp over. Not only can she draw, but she’s also a writer and a musician. (You should listen to this song. Starting at 2:40, I get tears in my eyes and I don’t even know why. It’s just SO beautiful.)
All this to say: I got a not-quite-finished preview of my Action Kids book front cover yesterday and I am thrilled. It reminds me a lot of a book I enjoyed as a kid and I’m just like ‘This is for one of my books!’ oh, the joys of being an author!
What about you? How much does the cover effect your first impression of the book?

Don’t forget about getting your entries in for the writing contest! (I’ve moved the deadline to July 4th, so hopefully that will help y’all!) And, if you would take a moment to vote over on the sidebar, that would be very helpful!

Meet my Illustrator – Dave Ham

You know how I said yesterday that I had a surprise. Guess what! Y’all are going to get to ‘meet’ my illustrator! Pretty exciting, right? Seriously, we’ve been working on getting this post together for several months now and I’m so excited about getting to share it with y’all!

Here’s a little bit of background: I needed an illustrator, and I needed one fast. There were several different people my adopted parents (and co-authors) and I talked about, but every time one of us wouldn’t be exactly thrilled with their styles. Then my adopted dad mentioned Dave Ham. And the rest is history. Anyway. Now for your chance to meet him, and see some of his art work. =)

Oh, and by the way, this year Dave won best of show in two country fairs (Boone and Kenton) as well as best of show in the Kentucky state show. Pretty cool, right? Yeah. He’s that amazing of an artist.

All artwork was done by Dave, of course 😉

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Dave Ham, I’m 17 and I’m a homeschool senior.

What is one of your favorite authors?

My favourite author is Dr Seuss, obviously. 🙂

Can you tell us some about one of your pictures?
Here’s the background for the picture of Priscilla: I mainly did it for their family. Priscilla’s mother is a photographer that was diagnosed with MS, and she has a fairly rapid progression of the disease. I found a photo of Priscilla (that was taken by her mom) that had a perfect expression that I wanted to capture of her in a drawing. I’m sure most people look at the drawing and see a pretty girl; but I dont see it that plainly. I see a drawing that represents daughters who help their mothers and are strong for their families, which is very beautiful.

About drawing….

What inspired you to draw?

My drawings are not inspired by my emotions as much as they are inspired by my friendships. I love drawing my family, and I love drawing for close friends. I’ve never really enjoyed drawing people I’ve never met before.

What style do you draw?
I like to draw mostly realism, but lately I’ve been working on some hyper realism – I’m trying to make my drawings look like high definition photographs. This requires a lot of detail and a lot of patience. I have to use ginormous paper because everything I draw has to be almost twice it’s size for me to be able to fit in all the detail.

How long have you been drawing?
I have been drawing for almost two years, but haven’t been of any merit until the last few months.

What is your goal with drawing?

Whatever The Lord has given me should be used for His glory. That is my main objective with drawing, as well as for it to give me a stable occupation in the future.

When you’re drawing do you listen to music? If so, what?

I usually listen to Christian radio or the classical station on pandora when I draw.

If you could….

Go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

If I could go anywhere in the world I would go to Italy and sketch buildings all day. It just looks so pretty!

Be anything you wanted (career-wise) what would it be?

My ideal career is obviously a form of artwork, but I don’t know if I want to teach in a college or work for a company… I guess I have a while to figure that out with Gods help.

Aidyl here now: So y’all, what do you think? Which one is your favorite?
They’re all pretty impressive, right? My favorite is the last one, although they are all breathtaking in my eyes. I hope y’all enjoyed this post as much as I did! 😉 Thanks Dave for doing this with me, it was fun!
