Welcome to the A to Z Challenge. This year I’m blogging about the Behind the Scenes for the Echoes Trilogy – a story a started writing about six years ago.
Sometimes when I’m working on a book my thoughts get all jumbled up in my head, and I can’t pick one idea out to focus on. There have several ways I’ve found to help un-jumble my thoughts, so I wanted to share those with y’all today.
- Go and take a walk
- Swing (on a swing set. listening to music. kicking my legs back and forth.)
- Find someone to have a character chat with – meaning you text-chat with someone, but both of you play the role of various characters instead of being yourself
- Read writing prompts online
- Sit down and write whatever random things pop into my mind, then read back through it and see if I came up with any good ideas
- Cut grass
- Rapidly clean my office
- Make coffee and light a candle and turn on inspirational music
- Talk about the story idea with someone
- Look through book reviews online
(Random note: I’m currently sick, and my brain has been quite foggy recently. Hence the late post today.)
Aw, feel better, Aidyl! Those are great ways to un-jumble your thoughts – we have a swing in our backyard and you come to mind whenever I swing on it, because I know your love of swinging! 🙂 Why is it that so many ideas come while cleaning?

YAY for swings in the backyard! That’s fantastic. 🙂 And awww, it makes me feel special that you think of me when you swing. And YES I’m currently wanting to go swing right now. 😉
And who knows why so many ideas come while cleaning? Maybe it’s cause our brain is rewarding us for doing mundane work? 😉

If I didn’t have my posts ready in advance, I’d never keep up. Well, I barely keep up with visits and comments as it is. Feel better.

I generally like to get posts done ahead of time, but this year I didn’t choose my subject until way late. And yes, I’m currently very behind in comments – although a large part of that is due to the fact that I’ve been sick for the last while. Thank you for commenting on all of my posts! It makes me happy. 🙂

YES! Character chats generally lead to me smiling a lot, and even laughing out loud at times. Aww, thank you so much for praying for me! That means a lot! =)

These are some awesome ideas, Lydia. I really need to work on getting up and just moving or doing something creative when the writing “juice” is not flowing. I think it would help me to keep pressing on.

Determining to keep pressing on even when it’s work and not fun? Yeah, it’s hard, but really worth it! Keep job with keeping on keeping on!
