“That” – When a Book Leaves You Wordless

I average reading nearly a dozen books a month. My world sometimes seems like it revolves around words. I read. Write. Study the craft.

Yet it’s only a couple of times a year that a book sucks me in and holds me captive. It’s like a shell tangled in seaweed. The sticky threads of the story wrap their arms around me and compel me to continue reading.

Currently I’m thankful that 1) It’s still nearly two weeks before I actually have post a review of the book I just finished and 2) That I have a host of housework that needs done so I can focus on that this morning and let my brain recover a bit.

This book. Wow.

The writing was beautiful. The storyline so true. So incredible horrible. And so very real. The crazy thing was it’s a subject I’ve felt tugging at my heart for several years, but I had no clue that was what the book was dealing with when I began reading.

And for once, I wholeheartedly agree with the ending of a book, if ending is even a correct term. (That’s a huge deal considering I very, very rarely ever like how stories end.) There was seriously no other way to end the book.

Did I like the book? No. Was it enjoyable? No. Did I agree with everything (anything?) the characters did? No. But was it powerful? Yes. Was it a subject that needs talked about? Yes. Did it make me want to shove it into hands of people I’ve met in real life? Yes. Will I recommend it? Well… unfortunately probably not.

And this, my friends, is what it feels like to be overwhelmed (in a very good way) by a book.

        Well, sure!

        Just over a month ago I was reading “A Man Called Peter” by Catherine Marshall. (She wrote it as a biography on her husband, a famous minister in the 30s-40s). This book truly is AMAZING and honestly is a blessing to read.

        Also, the book “Cinder” by Marissa Meyer. (Here’s where we get into “young adult” fiction, which I usually avoid.) But I REALLY like this one! It has just enough fairytale and sci-fi mixed together as one to create a unique story. However, after I read the next book in the series, my opinion went downhill a bit.

        The #1 book that still stands out to me from last year is the gothic classic “Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier. (It’s not for everyone though, as it can come off as… creepy?) The book itself is an enigma of sorts, and I was hooked from the first line. I still think about the plot all. the. time.

          I read “A Man Called Peter” years ago, but don’t fully recall my thoughts about it.
          I’ve seen a lot about “Cinder” and have often wondered how “clean” of a book it is, because I’ve seen quite a few people gushing about it. 🙂
          As for “Rebecca” I’ve never read that, but it sounds very thought provoking. 🙂 But, creepy isn’t really my style…

          I hope you read more great books in the future!

    Wow! I get that feeling sometimes, when there is a book that leaves you speechless and…yeah, just really… something. It’s hard to describe. But it’s a really good feeling! The question is, what book is it that you’re talking about?? You’ve got me all curious now… 😀

      Ah yes!!! I’ve heard SO MUCH about this book and it really makes me want to read it. Expect for the fact that so much editing is needed. But yes, it sounds fantastic.

    It is fantastic!! But, yeah, kinda sad that he couldn’t have just left the language out and toned down a couple of the scenes. When Kate and I would get to a huge paragraph of whiteout we’d be like “thanks mom!!” Lol I have her working on two more copies to gift my friends, and I keep telling her she needs to start a book-filtering business. XD #momsareawesome

      YES! Whenever books have language in them, I’m like “FOR REAL PEOPLE!” because it doesn’t really add that much, and it makes me little self quite sad. 🙂
      And wow, your mom sounds amazing. 🙂 Yay for her!
