Me, A Writer?

I am so overwhelmed with how I’ve been privileged to be an author. Even getting to write this post is a dream come true for me.

For as long as I can remember, books have played a big part in my life. I remember being curled up in bed next to Mom as a little girl, listening to her read. I remember getting hurt as a child and being comforted by sitting on my older sister’s lap while she read to me. When we had clothes to fold or socks to match up, that same sister would read to us children. Sometimes in the afternoon, Mom would make us Turkish tea, and we would all sit around drinking while she read to us. Later on, when we were canning and freezing food, Mom would sometimes read to us as we worked. Dad would read the Bible to our family in the mornings and sometimes another book after lunch or supper.

When we were younger, we would get rewards when we read. As we got older, reading became a reward in itself. I remember some of the first chapter books I ever read by myself, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Treasures of the Snow. I lived those stories over and over again as I went about my daily work. Then came the day when reading wasn’t enough. I wanted to write, too.

I’m not sure how old I was when I first decided I wanted to become a writer, but I know the very thought of being an author filled me with an awed wonder. I would day dream about it, write little stories, constantly conjure up new ones, and imagine what it would be like to one day have my name on the cover of a book. To me, being an author was about the highest level in life you could attain (which I now know isn’t true, but at the time it seemed to be!).

As I got older, my day dreaming continued, but my little stories turned into hours of long, hard work spent on writing. I’ve been extremely blessed with a supportive, loving family.  I can’t remember ever doubting that I would one day be a published author. My family encouraged me, stood behind me and cheered me on. I used to dream of utterly surprising my (extended) family with the news that I had a publishing contract, but by the time it happened, I realized I couldn’t surprise them like I had dreamed of. They were all expecting it. They believed in me. Now I am a published author. I’m still in awe over the fact. Just about every day I thank God for making me a writer.

It’s kinda funny though, because I’m still me, and I always will be. Getting published changed my life for sure, but in many ways, I’m still me. I’m still the little girl who prays and dreams of changing the world though writing. I’m still the girl who gets giddy with excitement when I meet another author “What, a writer? Me too!”. I’m still the girl who has to juggle house work and family time and writing so that they don’t become a jumbled heap. I’m still me, and I’m so very thankful for my life.

Writing books for children (a little older than my niece & nephew) is a dream come true!
No matter what your dream is, no matter how late in life it is, it’s never to late to begin living the life God created you for. Why not step out now and start doing what you were made to do? And why not encourage others? A simple word can go so far!

What are some of your dreams?

You are definitely an inspirational writer. My dream was always to be a published songwriter. Being a performer was always a dream as well, but as I've gotten older, it seems that dream slips further away. These days, in music, it seems if you're any older then 15, you're too old for the music business. But I pray that the Lord will open that door still. It's exciting to see you writing and your triumphs and gives me hope that some version of my dream will happen.

Oh, my! I love Treasures of The Snow! And I'm named after Laura from the Little House books. I think it's so cool that you're a writer. I love to read and write, but I hope to be a pediatric surgeon- with a little writing on the side, of course. I can't imagine not writing. 🙂
    Blessings,

Very happy your dream has come true! You definitely worked very hard towards it! 🙂 My dream is simply to continue to write whether I traditional publish or not – just having a handful of people who read my books is enough for me to keep writing them. But more then that, I would like to make a CD someday. I love singing! 🙂

I have been writing since i was 12. As hard as it is to take, my writing has been improved partly by people's criticism about what my stories lack. I love to read. My writing has been influenced partly by my books i read. well gotta go good luck
