When Life Hands You Lymes #2

It’s Friday, again, folks! That means…. Time for my continuing story. 🙂 Read the first part here. It was great reading all your comments last time peoples, keep it up! Madalyn’s story has been bursting to be shared, so without further delay, my I present…
When Life Hands You Lymes #2

Just saying though, piano music rocks my boat. And I’m not just talking about happy, bouncy music, although I adore that, I’m also talking about classical. Yes, you just heard that right. Madalyn Marie Emerson likes classical music. Surprised? To tell the truth, I was too. I never thought I was that kind of girl. Shakespeare? No thanks! Typewriters? Or not. And I always figured classical music would be the same way. Just goes to show you can’t trust trends. Or something like that.

I can still remember the first time I felt the magic of classical piano falling over me. It was the summer I was ten and our family was on a grand tour of Europe. We had already been there for several days and I wanted to explore some cool castle or another adventuresome place like that. Dad informed us though that we were going to go to a concert in one of the great old halls. My first thought was Really? And even though I decided it couldn’t be that bad (we were in Europe after all, which was a life-long dream of mine, or at least something I had been dreaming about since I was eight…), I wasn’t excited. I mean, you weigh the choices yourself: An old castle or an old concert? Not hard to see which one’s more enticing, right? Boy was I wrong though!

The music was so moving that I couldn’t stop myself from totally falling in love with it. Ok, so maybe you’re thinking that’s a bit of an overstatement. But when you fall in love with something, you want to spend the rest of your life with it, right? And that’s how I felt about the classical music. I wanted to spend time with it day in and day out, even when it didn’t sound like fun any more. And I did. Every day since then I’ve worked on my music. Almost every day anyway. I’m sure I’ve missed a few. Music is my life though. Kinda. People would take first place, music second.

Alright. So, I’m getting off subject here, aren’t I? Katie says that’s what happens when you stuff ten-people’s worth of life and action into one little 5 foot 7 me, although I’ve never been totally sure if that’s a compliment or not. She’s saying I’ve got a lot of energy, which is a good thing. So I guess it would be a compliment.

Speaking of lots of energy, planning our yearly conference is tons of work. We have about eight hundred of our employes come in for a training conference. It’s a lot of fun, but really tiring at the same time. Seriously, think about it, talking with eight hundred people in four days. And yes, I generally talk to every single one of them.

“Do we have the photographer set in stone this time?” Mom asked Katie as we sat down to breakfast. We try to eat together at least once a day.

“Yes, and I’ve got a backup just in case.” Katie scooped some scrambled eggs on to her plate and then dosed them with hot sauce. Our event photographer last year was a nightmare. He decided to back out at the last minute and we were left looking much like the eggs on my sister’s plate, scrambling around trying to figure out what to do.

“Great job, honey. What about the music?” Mom asked, turning her attention to me.
We use our sound-guys to run the sound equipment (we always video the training sessions) but since I love music so much, I’ve been given the job of helping pick out the soundtracks to play during breaks and at the beginning of the meetings. It helps keep the ambience of the room excited since we normally use tracks like Chariots of Fire and the Rocky theme-song.

“All set. I gave Pace the itinerary yesterday.” Pace is the top sound-guy, he’s really nice. I’ve known him since I was like eight. When I was younger, I dreamed of him and Katie getting married. Then he got married and crushed those fantasias. Oh well, his wife is great and I still have Katie’s marriage to plot, so I’m happy.

OK, this is my reaction: I found the title very intriguing. The first three paragraphs where the character talks about her love for classical music, I found my attention was wandering— perhaps it was a bit too much? Even though I love classical music myself and have since childhood. The rest of it I though was very well written and kept my attention, even though I'm not sure if it's the sort of book I care for.

I enjoyed this next installment of your story as well, Aidyl. Keep up the good work. Madelyn sounds like a very interesting character to work with.

    Can't wait to read more!

    God bless!

I really enjoyed this post. At times, the main character does seem to be “rambling” a bit, but I get the feeling that you're writing it that way on purpose so that when our character is handed her “lymes” we'll see a drastic difference in her. Not sure it that's what your going through, that's just kind of what I suspect. All in all, it's a great step in the story and still is leaving me wanting the rest of the story. Keep up the good work, Aidyl.

Madalyn is definitely energetic. Lol. I think the fact that you're just writing as you go rather than plotting (right?) makes it easier to ramble than normal. You might want to clean that up a bit, but other than that, I love it. Very interesting!

Yep! Rambling is a problem I get when I'm still getting a feel for the character. I'll be sure to cut it out. This is just the first draft, so there are some big problems. Thanks for the feedback!

Are you “free writing” this story? It kind of feels like that. However you're doing it, it's working. I just feel like our protagonist is a bubbly, happy young lady. I look forward to the continuing saga of Madalyn. 🙂
