50/50 Jaunt Michigan by Kiri Liz

Aidyl Ewoh has kindly invited me to guest post on her lovely blog as part of her 50/50 Jaunt, and I’m really excited about this! Guest posting is so much fun! 


But we’re not here to talk about guest posting… no, we’re here to mention one of the fifty states in our swell country, my home state: Michigan.


So, first a little history and whatnot:
Michigan is located in the Midwestern United States and is known as the Great Lakes State. Why? Because we’re surrounded by Great Lakes. Lake Michigan on the west, Lake Huron on the east, Lake Superior on the north, and Lake Erie on the southeast. The only Great Lake Michigan does not touch is Lake Ontario which is situated more in the east towards New York. Did you know that anywhere you stand in Michigan, you can never be more than 6 miles from any natural water source because there are so many inland lakes and streams?

Michigan was admitted to the Union on January 26, 1837 as the 26th state and consists of two peninsulas, the Upper and the Lower. I’ve never been to the UP (Upper Peninsula), so I can’t exactly tell you what to expect there. Yeah, in Michigan, UP is a place, not a direction. The Lower Peninsula bears an extreme likeness to a mitten, and thus, Michigan has been also dubbed The Mitten State. And since Michigan is in the shape of a hand, Michiganders (including myself) have gotten into the practice of pointing to a spot on our hands whenever people ask us where we’re from. It’s great fun!


Questions asked by our lovely hostess, Aidyl:

1. What is your favorite thing about the State you live in? 
There are so many things I love about Michigan it would be hard to list them all. I love Michigan’s rolling hills, growing fields, golden sunsets (I dare you to try to get a more gorgeous sunset than those that set over Lake Michigan)… 

You really can’t capture the beauty of the sunsets with a
camera. You just really need to see them in person.


…and white Christmases. Michigan has a reputation for being cold, snowy, frosty, and icy, so those of you who love the snow like I do, this is one of the best places to be!

I can’t talk about Michigan without once mentioning the lighthouses. Because Michigan touches so many of the Great Lakes (it has the longest freshwater coastline of any political subdivision in the world), it boasts more lighthouses than any other state. Here are two of my favorites:

2. What (if any) is a common misunderstanding people have about your State?
I really can’t think of any misunderstandings about Michigan that many people have. Most of the time, Michigan is just what people imagine, only more fun and more beautiful. Well, there is this thought: Michiganders are all the same. Allow me to say: We’re not. People who live in the UP are different than those who live in the LP. People who live in Detroit are vastly different than those who live in the western plains. And the list goes on… 


3. If there were any place in your State you would like to visit, where would it be? 

Mackinac Island

One place I’d really like to go is the Mackinac (pronounced Mack-in-awe) Bridge that connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. I’ve heard so much about Mackinac, but I’ve never been there, and of course, going to the bridge would also mean a visit to Mackinac Island and the UP.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is another spot popular for tourists. I’ve been here once and I climbed the dunes (not an easy feat, let me tell you!), but I’ve yet to make the hike from the dunes to Lake Michigan, which I would really like to attempt someday. 🙂


A little bit about me:
I wasn’t actually born in Michigan. Nope. Astonishing, right? But I still really love this state. I was born down south, past the Mason-Dixon line, and my family moved to Michigan when I was 3 or 4. We lived in a splendid yellow brick farmhouse for about 6 years, and then my dad got a job in the Northeast, so we moved there where we lived for 5 years. Then about 6 years ago, the Lord called my dad back to Michigan to start a church, and we now live in the town consecutive to the town we used to live in when we first moved to Michigan. 

I’m a 19-year-old homeschool graduate and currently working as a part-time editorial assistant for my dad who is a web designer. Music is a big part of my house, and my parents, my four sisters, my one brother, and I all sing together as a family for local churches, events, etc. I love music: classical, sacred, and soundtracks being my favorite genres. And, as you can probably guess by the length of this post, I’m a huge fan of words. I. Love. Writing. My main blog is Lianne Taimenlore where I blog about life and literature under a maple tree, and I also blog over at Allergic to Chocolate, A Hundred And One Titles, KiriBeth, Bizarre American Holidays, and The Silver Key Of Poetry. Yes, I love blogging. The most important thing in my life is my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and everything that I do, I do for His glory and honor.
