50/50 Jaunt Virginia by Tory

Hi there!!! My name is Tory Sherrill and I live in Northern Virginia. When I saw Aidyl’s first post about the 50/50 Jaunt, I knew I wanted to represent Virginia. I think I have a unique perspective on my state because my family is military and we have lived in lots of states. I can see more clearly the unique culture of the state having not been immersed in it my entire life. 🙂
1. What is my favorite thing about Virginia?

My favorite thing about Virginia is the diversity. I live three miles away from Mount Vernon and five miles from the Metro. I LOVE the mix of historical monuments and bustling metropolis.
One of my absolute favorite places to go in my entire area is Gadsby’s Tavern in Old Towne Alexandria. Every Tuesday the Alexandria Assembly gathers for an evening of English Country Dancing. It is such a wonderful experience to be able to dance in the same exact building where our founding fathers danced. It was in this building that George Washington held his Birth-Night ball in 1798 and 1799. 🙂
2. What is a common misunderstanding that people have about Virginia?

The most common misunderstanding about Virginia is that it is a southern state… It is not… I have this theory… I think that Virginia should be three states: Virginia, West Virginia, and Northern Virginia. Northern Virginia is a completely different culture than the rest of the state. The proximity to DC has made it a cultural melting pot. Indian, Jamaican, African, Chinese, Middle Eastern… They are all here… And that has pretty much eradicated any feeling of southern-ness this side of Fredricksburg… 😉
3. What is the place that I would most like to visit in Virginia?
I really really want to drive the Blue Ridge Mountains Skyline Drive. It is basically a very scenic route through the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have heard it is amazing. 🙂
About Me
I am twenty years old and I live with my family in Alexandria, Virginia. I was home schooled and I now attend Northern Virginia Community College majoring in Liberal Arts. I also work part time at one of the local libraries as a Page. Between work, school and church I am constantly on the go… In fact,  everyone in my family either works part time or is going to school part time… We definitely emulate the culture of this part of the state… Super busy, yet laid back and rich in personality…
Come visit my blog, A Splash of Red, where I post about, well, anything that comes to my mind… 🙂
Thanks for reading my post!!!!! 🙂
