Writing Contest

Hey everyone! So yeah, we’ve had some really big, bad storms around here, so only like 10% of the people in the county where we live have electric… Thankfully we’re among those who do have it, although it has gone out briefly a couple of times. I’ll tell more about the storm later, just an *ahem* excuse for sparse updating. (We don’t have our Internet, we do have a little Mifi that I’m using, but it’s not always available and it’s willy, willy slow.)
So I’ve got this great idea…
I am going to do something that I think will be tons of fun. I am having… Do I have your attention? Good… I am having a… Writing Contest! Yeppers, that’s what I said. A writing contest.
So, here’s what the rules are:
  • Write a story that is between 500-5,000 words
  • It can be fiction or non-fiction, whichever you wish
  • Please do your best to edit the story, a story that has correct punctuation and spelling goes a long way
  • Send the story by July 13th (You can send it to my email, aidylewoh@gmail.com)
  • I will pick my top three favorites and then post them on my blog with a voting poll
  • Let all your friends know about it so they can enter, too
  • What not to do: Please don’t write a story that is supernatural, fantasy or romance; those will be disqualified (This is not what I consider fantasy)

So yeah! I’m excited to hear from you all!
Oh yeah, prizes! The person who wins the contest gets this book. (Or if they aren’t interested in that, I have a nice journal they can choose.)

I’m eager to read your story, Emma! I would really appreciate it if you would post something about the contest on your blog, so more people hear about it and can enter. Thanks!

Hey I just found your blog recently through Katie, and I'll give entering a shot but I dont know if I can get it done in time. Anyhow, could you enter a half written story and add a 'to be continued…' I'd understand if thats not allowed.

So… I have a question. I was looking through your rules of entry and I noticed the story-type restrictions at the bottom. (i.e no supernatural, fantasy, or romance.) Now, I've been seeing this a lot lately, mainly on Christian writers blogs(Just for the record, I'm a Christian.) and it just strikes me as odd. Excluding romance I can understand and maybe some supernatural stuff, but fantasy… I mean, I think that fantsy really opens up a whole new world of writing that can be glorifying to God. (i.e Lord Of The Rings and Chronicles Of Narnia.)
I love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

    Hey Jake!

Thanks for addressing the issue. My reasons for putting those guidelines are for two reasons:
The main one is that I do not enjoy reading supernatural stuff nor fantasy… And since I’m judging the contest, I didn’t want contestants having an unfair advantage or disadvantage because they’re writing a genre that I do or don’t enjoy.
My second (lesser) reason is that I there are a lot of books/stories that have those themes that I don’t agree with, and therefore I didn’t want to be bothered with that.

If you have any other questions, I’d be glad to answer them! And, if you end up entering the contest, I look forward to reading your story!

Thanks for the quick reply! I understand and respect your reasons. But if I wanted to enter I couldn't submit anything from my fantsy works? (They would be clean by the way. And the one I have in mind aren't overtly fantastical.)

And yes, another question. Does it have to be a complete story(i.e with an ending.) Or can it be, say, a prologue?

I’m sorry that it’s inconvenient, but since I’ve already set the guidelines, I’m going to stick to them. So no, no fantasy. =/ In answer to your second question, no, it doesn’t have to have an ending. =) I hope to see you enter if you can think up something!

This sounds so fun! I'd enter if I could submit a short fantasy vignette. It sort of reads more like a historical fiction piece than anything else… but it's still fantasy. Also, my brain is shot… so I'm kind of only cranking out garbage right now.

I hope it goes well! 🙂

    Hey Jeanette!

Did you look at my ‘My Writing’ page? The style that I have there is allowed. Maybe your vignette would fit in a category that’s accepted? =)

Aidyl, thank you for your invitation to participate in this creative writing contest! I would have loved to enter, however, I have been so swamped preparing for college this fall. I haven't even been updating my own blog like I should! But I think it's wonderful that you're encouraging other writers! Keep it up!

    Hey Aidyl!
Thanks for the invite on my blog! I'm so sorry I couldn't enter. I was away all last week so I had no access to internet or blogger and just saw your comment now. Let me know about the next contest you host:)
